Baker Mayfield's dislocated thumb injury could keep the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback sidelined longer than the initially expected three weeks, as reported by ESPN. Coach Todd Bowles indicated that Mayfield's recovery hinges on his ability to grip the football, with a potential extension of his absence up to six weeks.

Following an MRI on Monday that revealed no additional damage, surgery remains off the table for Mayfield. However, the Buccaneers face a dilemma regarding his placement on IR if the recovery period exceeds four weeks.

Despite an impressive 2025 season, Mayfield struggled in his recent outings, completing 63.5% of his passes for 615 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in three games, contributing to the team’s winless start. He faced significant pressure, suffering six sacks during the Week 3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Former Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski commented on Mayfield's need to manage pressure better, suggesting he should often throw the ball away rather than attempt risky plays.

With Mayfield out, undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels is set to take the helm as the starting quarterback, aiming to turn around the Buccaneers' fortunes. Daniels will be the first starter not named Mayfield since 2022 and will face the Green Bay Packers this Sunday. He shared that Mayfield provided valuable encouragement, advising him to stay composed and play his game.

Daniels expressed gratitude for the opportunity and emphasized the importance of preparation, stating, "Defenses try to confuse rookie quarterbacks, and I’m aware of that. I’m trying to lean on my teammates to gather all the insights I can." With only seven teams historically making the playoffs after starting 0-3, Daniels's performance will be crucial for the Buccaneers as they seek to salvage their season.
