Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield recently voiced his discontent regarding the lack of a contract extension as training camp commenced. Speaking at camp, Mayfield confirmed that negotiations have ceased and expressed feeling "disrespected" by the quality of offers he received from the team.

"Disappointing in that regard to feel disrespected a little bit," Mayfield stated, emphasizing the disappointment of feeling undervalued after believing he had earned a better deal.

The crux of the issue seems to lie in the disparity between Mayfield's expectations and the Bucs' offers. He revealed that the team proposed a two-year deal that fell significantly short of the $50 million-per-year threshold he aimed for. Most established franchise quarterbacks typically secure four-year contracts worth at least $40 million, which Mayfield argues he deserves based on his performance and reputation.

Currently, 12 quarterbacks command at least $50 million annually, with most of them on long-term contracts. Mayfield believes he fits this category, yet the Bucs did not align with this valuation.

In terms of performance, Mayfield has had a mixed tenure in Tampa, completing 66.3% of his passes with 95 touchdowns and 37 interceptions over three seasons. His standout season was under former offensive coordinator Liam Coen, where he achieved remarkable stats that suggest potential as a franchise quarterback.

Looking ahead, Mayfield will play out the final year of his three-year, $100 million contract, which pays him a base salary of $10 million for the 2026 season, alongside bonuses that bring his cap hit to $39.975 million. He aims to revitalize his career under new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson. If successful, he could secure a lucrative contract, either with the Bucs or another team. However, failure to reach an agreement might lead the Bucs to franchise tag him next season.
