Kimi Antonelli showcased his dominance in the first practice session at the Austrian Grand Prix, finishing ahead of George Russell in a Mercedes one-two finish. The session highlighted the reliability struggles of several competitors, particularly Max Verstappen, Isack Hadjar, and Lando Norris.

Two weeks following a defeat by Lewis Hamilton in Barcelona, Mercedes reaffirmed their status as frontrunners at the Red Bull Ring. Antonelli, who holds a 41-point lead over Hamilton and a 50-point lead over Russell in the Drivers' Championship, topped the timesheet by just 0.040 seconds. Oscar Piastri from McLaren trailed closely in third, just a tenth behind.

However, the session was not without issues:

• Lando Norris lost 45 minutes due to a hydraulics leak, putting him at a disadvantage.
• Max Verstappen faced software problems, halting him twice in the pit lane early in the session.
• Isack Hadjar had to change his engine, costing him significant track time.

Despite these challenges, Verstappen finished fourth, but expressed dissatisfaction with the car’s balance, stating it was “shaking under braking.” Sky Sports F1 analyst Karun Chandhok noted the unfavorable situation for Red Bull, especially with significant updates made for this race.

Ferrari debuted an upgraded engine but did not utilize it in a low-performance mode, leading to Hamilton’s fifth-place finish, which may not accurately reflect their pace. Charles Leclerc allowed Dino Beganovic, a Formula 2 driver, to take his place, with Beganovic impressively finishing ninth among the rookies.

The session concluded with a red flag caused by Sergio Perez of Cadillac, who stopped just before the checkered flag.
