Australian selectors have reaffirmed their faith in Marnus Labuschagne despite his recent struggles, naming him in the Test squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa. The series kicks off in Durban on October 9, with George Bailey, the chair of selectors, indicating a potential shift in batting order that may see Steve Smith return to the No. 3 position.

A total of 16 players were announced for the tour, including those who participated in the recent defeat against Bangladesh in Mackay. New additions include fast bowler Michael Neser, spinner Matthew Kuhnemann, and batter Cooper Connolly.

Bailey expressed confidence in Labuschagne, stating, "[We’re] not shying away from the fact that we’d like some more runs from Marn, but we’re also confident that he can still make a positive contribution to that squad." Labuschagne, who was the ICC’s top-ranked Test batter in 2023, has faced difficulties since his last century in the 2023 Ashes, averaging just 25 in the last summer's series.

The upcoming warm-up match in Potchefstroom is crucial for Labuschagne to regain form, while providing others a chance to stake their claims. Bailey noted that several players from the one-day series would transition into the Test squad, emphasizing the importance of adequate preparation.

Connolly, who has played one Test and has a promising first-class record with an average of 42, will be in South Africa for the ODI series prior to the Tests. Bailey also mentioned possible adjustments to the batting lineup, including moving Travis Head down the order to accommodate Smith at No. 3, a role he has historically excelled in.
