Australian men’s cycling showcases its strength with four riders in the Top 10 of the Giro d’Italia for the first time. Chris Harper secured 10th place in the general classification (GC) after finishing fourth in stage 11 to Chiavari, joining his compatriots Ben O’Connor (5th), Jai Hindley (6th), and Michael Storer (7th). Previously, Australia had never seen more than two riders finish in the GC Top 10 at a men’s grand tour.

Jonas Vingegaard, a three-time grand tour winner, trails the leader Afonso Eulálio by just 27 seconds, positioning himself as a strong contender with 10 stages remaining before the finish in Rome. While the Australian riders face a tough challenge to secure the top spot, O’Connor, Storer, and Hindley remain in contention for the podium.

The resurgence of Australian cyclists at the Giro follows a post-Covid slump, with 14 riders participating last year and 12 this year. Despite pre-race attention on sprinter Kaden Groves and Jay Vine, both faced injuries and had to withdraw.

The Western Australian trio is closely matched, with O’Connor leading the pack at 2min 48s behind Eulálio. He previously excelled when underestimated, finishing fourth overall at the 2024 Giro and narrowly missing the podium during his Tour de France debut in 2021.

Hindley, carrying doubts about his role with Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, shows promise as he sits 30 seconds ahead of teammate Giulio Pellizzari. Both riders are set to benefit from an upcoming flat stage that favors sprinters.

Storer aims to improve on his previous 10th place finishes at the last two Giros, having adjusted his preparation for a stronger performance. With aspirations for a podium finish, he could also become the second Australian to win the maglia azzurra since Matthew Lloyd in 2010.

Harper, part of a breakaway group in stage 11, aims to build on his previous success after his breakthrough victory last year. He is currently focused on stage wins rather than an overall high finish, sitting 4min 09s behind Eulálio.
