Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes is on the verge of joining Aston Villa in a deal valued at £38 million. The Brazil international has departed from Wolves' training camp in Portugal and is scheduled for a medical on Thursday.

The agreement entails an initial payment of £34 million with an additional £4 million in potential add-ons.

Aston Villa is in urgent need of midfield reinforcements following the sale of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United for £35 million and the serious knee injury to Amadou Onana, which will keep him out until next year after he sustained it while playing for Belgium at the World Cup.

In addition, Villa is nearing the completion of another significant signing, with Johan Manzambi, a Switzerland international, expected to join from Freiburg for a club record fee exceeding £50 million.

Despite interest from Atletico Madrid, a deal for Gomes was not finalized, paving the way for his transfer to Villa. Last season, Gomes made 41 appearances for Wolves, who finished bottom of the Premier League, and has a total of 130 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals since his arrival from Flamengo in 2023.
