Amy Hunt, the freshly-crowned European sprint double-champion, overcame significant health challenges to win the women’s 200 metres final in Birmingham. Competing in front of a record crowd of 20,082 fans, Hunt clocked an impressive 22.19 seconds, just edging out Rhasidat Adeleke, who set a new Irish national record for silver, and Dina Asher-Smith, who secured bronze.

Hunt, who previously won the 100m gold on Monday, expressed her determination, stating, “Two out of four, baby!” She elaborated on her struggles with low blood pressure, which led to fears of fainting during races, making her victory in the 200m particularly remarkable.

In her race, Asher-Smith got off to a strong start, but Hunt’s strength in the latter half of the race saw her pull ahead after the bend. Success Eduan, another British competitor, finished sixth in 22.66 seconds.

The addition of a mixed 4×100 relay event has opened new opportunities for Hunt, who aims to achieve an unprecedented four golds in a single championships. Reflecting on her accomplishment, she said, “I can’t even put it into words because I’ll start crying.” This victory holds special significance for her, as it comes after a challenging year.

Asher-Smith acknowledged her bronze medal, her ninth European medal, stating, “Any medal is a medal, isn’t it?” She also hinted at the potential to become the most decorated athlete in European Championships history.

In other highlights, Mark English secured Ireland’s first individual men’s gold medal at the European Championships in the 800m.
