Former Wales and British and Irish Lions wing Shane Williams expressed serious concerns regarding the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), stating that financial backing for schools and colleges rugby is "almost non-existent." As head of rugby at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, Williams emphasized that support appears to be directed primarily toward elite players associated with regional teams.

He articulated his worries during an interview on Radio Wales Breakfast, highlighting the critical nature of nurturing young talent:

• "Where do these youngsters come from? Are we looking after them in the pathway?"
• "Are we just prioritising the elite players that the regions are looking after? And the answer to that is 'yes'."

Williams lamented the loss of promising players due to insufficient investment from the WRU in student pathways. He stated, "We try and do our best as head of rugby and coaches in these schools and colleges, but we don't seem to be getting much back at the minute." This sentiment echoes previous calls for significant change within the WRU, including demands for the board to resign from figures like former Wales captain Jonathan Davies and businesswoman Hayley Parsons.

In light of the WRU's decision to reduce the number of professional teams from four to three by 2028, uncertainty looms over the futures of teams like the Scarlets and Ospreys. Williams voiced his lack of faith in the current leadership, stating, "No, I don't have much faith, to be honest with you." He called for greater support for the grassroots level, asserting that schools and colleges are vital for the development of future players. The WRU has been asked for comment on these pressing issues.
