Alex Ovechkin has officially committed to his NHL future, re-signing with the Washington Capitals for his 22nd season. The team announced on Thursday that Ovechkin signed a one-year contract valued at $4.25 million, aiming for another opportunity to secure his second Stanley Cup.

Ovechkin's contract includes a cap hit of $4.25 million for the 2026-27 season, with the potential to earn more through a $4.75 million bonus that activates after he plays 10 games. Should the Capitals lack the cap space to accommodate the full bonus, any remaining amount will roll over to the 2027-28 season.

As the all-time leading scorer in NHL history, Ovechkin looks to enhance his record of 929 goals. At 40 years old, he showcased his enduring talent last season by scoring 32 goals and remains a vital component of the Capitals' power play. With the team undergoing a roster retool, Ovechkin has a promising chance to chase another championship.

Drafted as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NHL Draft, Ovechkin made an immediate impact during his rookie season in 2005-06, claiming the Calder Trophy with 52 goals and 106 points. His rivalry with Sidney Crosby has become one of the most celebrated in sports.

Over his illustrious career, Ovechkin has surpassed 50 goals in a season nine times, including a remarkable 60 goals in 2007-08. Despite numerous accolades, including multiple Rocket Richard and Hart Trophies, he has only one Stanley Cup to his name.
