After declaring for the 2026 NFL Draft, Carter initially accepted the $427 to cover a flight for a workout but decided to return to the Vols for another season, promptly repaying the amount. Despite facing the risk of suspension, the NCAA originally imposed a three-game ban, which was later reduced to just one game, allowing him to make his season debut.

In a heartfelt statement, Carter explained his motivation:
