The Geelong Cats find themselves under scrutiny after reports emerged of a controversial deal with a player who has a history of concussions. This arrangement purportedly allowed the player to continue competing while protecting the club from future liabilities associated with brain injuries.

Initially reported by The Herald Sun, the deal, which dates back two years, was later confirmed to involve Geelong. The AFL Players’ Association chief executive, James Gallagher, expressed concerns that such an agreement could violate both competition rules and Australian law, stating:

"The game has a duty to provide a workplace that protects the health, safety, and wellbeing of players… Clubs cannot unilaterally contract out of their obligations under the CBA and standard playing contract."

Gallagher emphasized that players must be deemed medically fit before returning to play or train. Discussions with the AFL are ongoing to clarify the situation and prevent future occurrences.

Former West Coast coach Adam Simpson voiced his shock at the revelation, questioning how such a decision could be reached within the club’s hierarchy. The arrangement, reportedly approved by Geelong’s board at the time, raises serious ethical concerns about player welfare.

The issue of brain health and concussion remains a critical challenge for the AFL, especially as a class action lawsuit involving over 100 former players, including lead plaintiff Max Rooke, continues in Victorian courts. This lawsuit holds former Cats doctors liable for their actions dating back to 1985.

To enhance player safety, the AFL has recently empowered independent doctors to remove concussed players from games, a significant shift from previous protocols. Additionally, new guidelines will limit contact training sessions, aiming to reduce the risk of brain injuries in the upcoming pre-season.
