Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have officially submitted a joint bid to host the 2032 Africa Cup of Nations. This announcement follows the Confederation of African Football (Caf) opening applications for the upcoming editions of the prestigious tournament, namely 2028, 2032, and 2036.

The Malian Football Federation (Femafoot) emphasized that their proposal focuses on solidarity, regional integration, and the sustainable development of African football. They aim to collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure a "solid, credible bid" that brings a fresh vision to the continent’s football landscape.

The three nations, which recently departed from the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), have formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), fostering cooperation in security, infrastructure, trade, and economic development.

However, the security conditions in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger remain precarious due to ongoing attacks by armed jihadist groups. The governments of these countries have shifted their security alliances away from traditional Western partners, opting instead to strengthen ties with Russia.

Caf president Patrice Motsepe acknowledged the potential concerns regarding security when evaluating the bid. He stated that the three countries will not be disadvantaged because they are led by military juntas, but he highlighted the necessity of addressing safety and security issues. Motsepe affirmed, "The questions of safety and security… those are questions that we will have to address."

He also reiterated the importance of democracy, freedom of speech, and regular elections, stating that these principles are non-negotiable. Motsepe plans to visit these nations to discuss football-related matters, while emphasizing that the final decision on the host countries will rest with Caf's executive committee, which must ensure the safety and movement of fans and guests.
