Abbie Donnelly made history by becoming the first British woman to win a marathon medal at the European Championships, securing a bronze in Birmingham on Sunday.

Great Britain also celebrated a team gold, outperforming Italy and Spain to top the podium. Natasha Wilson finished fifth, and Rose Harvey placed 14th, contributing to the team's success.

Donnelly's performance marked the best by a female British marathon runner in this event since Kath Binns' ninth-place finish in 1982. She completed the marathon in 2 hours 27 minutes 33 seconds, finishing behind Hungary's Lili Anna Vindics-Toth and Finnish favourite Alisa Vainio, who clinched gold with a championship record time of 2:22:26.

This victory brings Great Britain's women's team marathon gold total to seven at the championships, just one behind leaders Italy.

Donnelly and Wilson worked together in the chasing pack, though it was Vindics-Toth who made a decisive move. Donnelly followed closely, managing to maintain her pace despite the challenging uphill finish.

Having previously won team golds in cross country and half marathon events, Donnelly expressed pride in her team, stating, "I'm so proud of the whole team; they all ran amazingly. I love the people in this sport and the atmosphere of running."
