A significant initiative is set to reshape the coaching landscape in women’s rugby, particularly in the Women’s Six Nations. Premiership Women’s Rugby (PWR) plans to introduce a 10-point plan next season aimed at increasing the number of female coaches at the international level, where currently only one top-10 nation is led by a woman.

The lack of diversity among top coaches is glaring, with Whitney Hansen the only female head coach of a top team, while Jo Yapp and Gaëlle Mignot recently stepped down from their roles with Wallaroos and France respectively. Despite a historical presence of three female head coaches in the 2025 tournament, the 2026 Women’s Six Nations will feature none.

Key points of the initiative include:

• Enforcing minimum standards for female coaches at clubs.
• Providing financial investments to support women in coaching roles.
• Offering training and development opportunities.

Genevieve Shore, chair of PWR, emphasized the need for systemic changes, stating, "There is a huge amount of work to do to change everything from perception, experience and pipeline of female coaches."

While some women, like Sarah Hunter and Emily Scarratt, are involved in the Six Nations setups, they are vastly outnumbered by male coaches. Rachel Taylor, assistant coach at Loughborough Lightning, highlighted the importance of World Rugby’s internship programmes in providing women with essential coaching experience.

Many believe that the lack of female coaches is partly due to the slow professionalization of women’s rugby. Elinor Snowsill noted that until recently, many players had to juggle full-time jobs alongside their rugby careers, making a transition to coaching less feasible.

Experts suggest that female coaches could offer unique insights, particularly regarding female biology and empathetic communication styles. As the women’s game continues to evolve, the hope is that these initiatives will cultivate a new generation of female coaches, ultimately enriching the sport at all levels.
