Former San Francisco 49ers star Roger Craig made a poignant revelation during his Pro Football Hall of Fame induction speech, disclosing that he has been diagnosed with vascular dementia. In a prerecorded video broadcast from Tom Benson Stadium on Saturday, Craig, adorned in his gold jacket, received heartfelt applause and embraces from fellow Hall of Famers, notably presented by Jamie Williams.

Nearly eight minutes into his address, Craig discussed his diagnosis, attributing it to potential concussions sustained during his playing career. He explained, "The changes were gradual... at first, easy to dismiss as normal aging. Over time, my family noticed, too."

Vascular dementia symptoms can include:

• Confusion
• Difficulty finding words
• Trouble organizing thoughts
• Memory issues

Craig emphasized the duality of his experience, stating, "Two things could be true. Football gave me opportunities beyond anything I can imagine... I hope sharing my story encourages people to pay attention to their health."

He expressed that this diagnosis does not define him, affirming, "I am still Roger Craig. I am still a father, husband, teammate, and friend. If sharing my story helps even one family, then it’s worth it."

Drafted by the 49ers in the second round of the 1983 draft, Craig became renowned for his versatility, contributing significantly to the team’s success in three of their five Super Bowl victories. Notably, he was the first player in NFL history to achieve 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in a single season in 1985, earning the title of AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 1988.

Reflecting on his career, Craig remarked on the importance of teamwork, stating, "What made those 49ers teams special: We weren’t selfish... We cared about winning."
