Tuchel Raises Doubts Over Foden's World Cup Selection After Disappointing Friendlies

Thomas Tuchel has cast uncertainty over Phil Foden's inclusion in the England squad for the upcoming World Cup finals after observing his lackluster performances in recent friendlies against Uruguay and Japan. Despite giving Foden significant opportunities, including starting him in both matches during the international window, Tuchel expressed concerns about the player's form. Foden played the No 10 role in the 1-1 draw against Uruguay and partnered with Cole Palmer in a 4-2-4 formation during the 1-0 defeat to Japan, but struggled to make an impact. Tuchel faces tough choices regarding which No 10s to select for the World Cup, with competition from: Cole Palmer Jude Bellingham Morgan Rogers Eberechi Eze (who can also play in this position) Foden, a standout player with nine seasons at Manchester City, has recently lost his starting position and could face disappointment ahead of the tournament. Tuchel noted, “Phil tried everything... He struggles to show it on the pitch,” highlighting Foden's recent lack of minutes with City. While Tuchel acknowledged Foden's positive attitude and training performance, he remarked, “It’s not a guarantee that he will come.” Foden's limited appearances under Tuchel include just one start in March against Albania and three substitute appearances. Since January, Foden has started only twice in the Premier League, failing to score since December 14 and remaining an unused substitute during City's Champions League exit against Real Madrid. With the World Cup approaching, Foden's future remains uncertain.
