Italian Sports Minister Rejects Azzurri's Last-Minute World Cup Bid

The Italian sports minister, Andrea Abodi, firmly dismissed a proposal for Italy to replace Iran at the 2026 World Cup, deeming it “not appropriate.” This rejection comes after Paolo Zampolli, a special envoy to Donald Trump, suggested that Italy should be fast-tracked into the tournament despite their unexpected defeat by Bosnia and Herzegovina in the playoffs last month. Abodi emphasized the importance of maintaining a meritocratic system for football's premier event. He stated, “Italy’s possible requalification for the 2026 World Cup... is firstly not possible, and secondly not appropriate. I don’t know what comes first. Qualification is on the pitch.” The speculation surrounding Iran's participation stems from geopolitical tensions involving the US and Israel. Iran is scheduled to play two group matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle. Although there were discussions about moving their matches to co-host Mexico, this idea seems unlikely to materialize. Notably, Iran has not requested to withdraw from the tournament, and FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed that they “will be at the World Cup.” Should circumstances alter Iran's status, there is no clear rationale for Italy's inclusion. The United Arab Emirates, as the next-highest-ranked Asian nation not qualified, is viewed as the most probable substitute.
