Wales Secures Narrow Win Against Albania in Women's World Cup Qualifier

Rhian Wilkinson expressed satisfaction after Wales secured a hard-fought victory against Albania in their Women's World Cup qualifier, despite a performance that fell below expectations. This match took place in Elbasan and followed a dominant 4-0 win in Wrexham just a week prior. The only goal of the match came from Rhiannon Roberts, who scored in the first half. However, the goal led to controversy as Albania argued it should have been disallowed for handball. Throughout the match, Wales struggled to maintain possession and faced significant challenges, including two instances where Albania hit the woodwork. Wilkinson noted: "Today was a hard day. I think we struggled in moments of the game, but I am really pleased that we found a way to win. I think that is the mark of a good team, that on off-days – and today was an off-day – we managed to figure out a way to get three points." The head coach acknowledged the competitive nature of their group, stating that the battle for the top spot would likely come down to the final match. She emphasized the importance of consistency, saying: "We have to make sure we show up in every game... there are no gimmes, no givens in this group. We have got to make sure we earn the three points." Wilkinson also praised Albania, stating they executed their game plan effectively, making it difficult for Wales to find their rhythm. "They played a sitting five who didn't jump out as much... it took us a bit too long to figure out," she reflected.
