Ollie Robinson Reflects on Unpreparedness for Ashes Despite Stunning England Comeback

Ollie Robinson has openly acknowledged that he was “nowhere near ready” for the Ashes, despite his remarkable return to England colors at Lord’s. In a stunning performance, the Sussex seamer took three wickets in his first over and concluded the day with impressive figures of 4-10, following his recall to the Test squad for the series against New Zealand. Robinson's performance sparked speculation about the impact he could have had during a challenging winter for England, where new-ball accuracy proved to be a significant issue. Having spent time in Sydney during the previous series, he even bowled at Australia’s Steve Smith in the nets, preparing for the first Test. Taking on the Sussex captaincy this season in the County Championship, Robinson has recently discovered the mindset necessary for a successful recall after being out of the international spotlight for over two years. “To be honest, I was nowhere near ready to play, nowhere near where I am now as a person or cricketer,” Robinson stated when reflecting on the Ashes. “It’s only been the last few months that I have got the enjoyment back for the game.” Robinson emphasized the importance of hard work, noting a recent text from Ben Stokes reminding him that while he has made progress, there is still much to accomplish. The day of Test cricket was marked by challenging conditions, resulting in 16 wickets falling amidst rain. New Zealand will resume play at 61-6, still trailing by 79 runs on a tricky pitch. Feeling elated about his return, Robinson admitted he had feared for his international career after being dropped post the India tour in early 2024. “It was just an incredible feeling to be out there and do that for the team. I was on cloud nine,” he shared, reflecting on the overwhelming support from the crowd and the nerves he felt before taking the field.
