Vikings Weigh Quarterback Options as J.J. McCarthy's Future Remains Uncertain
As the Minnesota Vikings prepare for the 2026 season, the future of J.J. McCarthy as their starting quarterback hangs in the balance. This week, executive vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski revealed that the team is "exploring all possibilities" at the position during his comments at the NFL Combine. The Vikings previously committed to McCarthy, a 2024 first-round pick, but his performance in his inaugural season raised questions. Over 10 games, he recorded 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, finishing with a 6-4 record after missing his rookie year due to a knee injury. Brzezinski emphasized the need for a baseline level of quarterback play, acknowledging that McCarthy faced challenges due to injuries. He stated, "What we do know is we need a level of baseline quarterback play for us to be effective." Neither Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell nor Brzezinski expressed certainty about McCarthy being the starter moving forward. O'Connell, however, maintained that he still believes in McCarthy's potential as a franchise quarterback despite the uncertainties surrounding the timeline. McCarthy remains under contract through 2027 on a four-year rookie deal worth $21.8 million guaranteed. Brzezinski noted that the team is not ruling out any options for their quarterback strategy. Potential free-agent targets include Aaron Rodgers, Malik Willis, and possibly Kyler Murray, depending on his situation with the Arizona Cardinals. The Indianapolis Colts also face a decision regarding Daniel Jones, who could be available if he does not receive a franchise tag. With various factors at play, the Vikings must carefully evaluate McCarthy's future as they seek to solidify their quarterback position.
