49ers Secure Trent Williams with Two-Year, $50 Million Extension

The San Francisco 49ers have solidified their offensive line by agreeing to a two-year extension with star left tackle Trent Williams, worth up to $50 million. According to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones, the deal guarantees $37 million, with $22 million allocated as a signing bonus. Previously, Williams was set to enter the final year of his contract with a $32.2 million base salary, but without any guaranteed money. This extension not only secures his financial future but also keeps him under contract until the end of the 2027 season, at which point he will be 39 years old. While the total value and guarantees of this deal do not match those of other elite tackles, the average annual value ranks eighth among all tackles. The guarantee of $18.5 million per year places him fourth, behind only Laremy Tunsil, Lane Johnson, and Jake Matthews. With Williams now committed for the next two seasons, the 49ers can approach the upcoming NFL Draft with a different strategy. Recent speculation surrounding Williams' contract had made them a popular choice for selecting a tackle in mock drafts. In fact, four out of six mock drafts from CBS Sports' experts recently predicted the 49ers would draft a tackle in the first round. Although Williams is aging, the 49ers can afford to be patient. They now have clarity on their starting left tackle position, allowing them to consider mid-round picks for developmental players or even postpone the need for a new tackle until next year.
