Sophia Dunkley Reflects on England Omission as Catalyst for T20 World Cup Success

Sophia Dunkley believes that her omission from the England squad in 2024 was a pivotal moment that set her on a path to success ahead of next month’s T20 World Cup. Two summers ago, Dunkley faced a setback when former head coach Jon Lewis dropped her, pushing her to prove herself in domestic cricket. Seizing the opportunity, Dunkley excelled, averaging an impressive 97.66 over her next five innings, leading to a swift recall to the national team. Despite her efforts, she found herself on the bench during the T20 World Cup that autumn, where England was eliminated in the group stage in the United Arab Emirates. Now, under the guidance of Charlotte Edwards, Dunkley has become a key player, forming a reliable opening partnership with Danni Wyatt-Hodge that has sidelined rising talent Davina Perrin from contention. Dunkley attributes her growth to the time away from the team, stating, "I think coming out of the team was the best thing that ever happened to me. I could go away, mentally reframe what I wanted to do... It’s definitely given me a better trajectory." In the recent 2-1 series win over New Zealand, Dunkley scored 56 runs across three innings. She anticipates three more matches against India to fine-tune her performance, starting at Chelmsford on Thursday. With heightened expectations at home, Dunkley reflects on her past experiences, saying, "I was in the crowd then, watching the girls lift that trophy... Creating that party feel again in England is something that we really hope can happen. We love playing at home, we love the crowds."
