Sonny Baker Embraces Injuries in Pursuit of Lightning Fast Bowling

Sonny Baker, the promising fast bowler, has openly accepted the risks that come with his pursuit of speed, aiming to emulate the likes of Mark Wood and Jofra Archer. In a recent pre-season display, Baker clocked a personal best of 91.5mph, showcasing his potential during Hampshire’s County Championship victory over Yorkshire, where he achieved a remarkable triple-wicket maiden. Baker, at just 23 years old, has already dealt with three stress fractures in his lower back but remains undeterred. He acknowledges the excitement that fast bowling brings to the game, stating, "People come out of the bar to watch Mark Wood and Jofra Archer." He believes that faster deliveries create a greater challenge for batters, enhancing the thrill of the sport. In his quest for speed, Baker has sought advice from seasoned bowlers like Wood, who reassured him that there is no simple solution to consistently bowling over 90mph without facing injuries. Baker reflected on Wood's guidance: "There’s no magic bullet... it’s staying on top of everything at once." Additionally, Jofra Archer offered valuable insight following Baker's less-than-stellar ODI and T20 debut last September. Archer reminded him that off-days are part of the journey, reinforcing Baker's belief in his abilities: "You are good enough to be there because otherwise you wouldn’t be picked." Currently on a one-year England central contract, Baker has only played nine first-class matches but is being considered for a Test call-up. With Brydon Carse’s injury potentially opening another fast bowling spot, Baker’s eyes are set on the 2027 Ashes. However, his immediate focus remains on his performance with Hampshire, as they prepare to face Somerset at the Utilita Bowl. He emphasizes his determination: "I’m very, very hungry to try and do everything I can to try and earn that."
