Scotland Women’s Rugby Faces Contract Turmoil Ahead of World Cup Journey

The road to the 2025 Rugby World Cup quarter-finals was marked by significant contract uncertainty for the Scotland women's rugby team. Former international Beth Blacklock highlighted the struggles players faced amidst negotiations with the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU), which were described as "disruptive" by captain Rachel Malcolm. During pre-World Cup camps, contract talks created tension within the squad. While some players had contracts extending until May 2026, others faced expiry in October 2025, post-tournament. In November 2023, the SRU announced financial support for 35 players, yet only 21 of the 32 World Cup squad members received contracts, leaving several in limbo. Blacklock, who had a five-month contract covering the World Cup, expressed empathy for teammates struggling with uncertainty. She stated, "There were definitely some players who were feeling in a hard place who didn’t necessarily feel they could control getting a contract." Despite the challenges, Blacklock maintained her mental well-being throughout the ordeal, attributing her resilience to having a supportive network. After the World Cup, she returned to Saracens but decided to retire from international play, shifting her focus to a career in data engineering and aspiring to become a commercial pilot. Reflecting on the team's future, Blacklock praised the new coaching staff led by Sione Fukofuka. She expressed optimism about the potential for growth in Scottish women’s rugby, especially with the upcoming standalone match against England at Murrayfield this Saturday, where nearly 30,000 tickets have already been sold. As Scotland embarks on this new chapter, Blacklock's insights underscore the promise and challenges ahead for the team, emphasizing the support from fans and the caliber of players within the squad.
