Sam Gilley Shifts Focus: No Rematch with Greene, Eyes Victory Against Aston Brown

Sam Gilley aims to put a challenging year behind him as he steps up to middleweight to face Aston Brown in Glasgow on Friday. The former Commonwealth champion experienced a tough 2022, drawing with Gideon Onyenani and narrowly losing to Ishmael Davis for the British super-welterweight title, a defeat that left him frustrated, especially as it occurred at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, his favored football venue. Reflecting on his past bouts, Gilley stated, "I still think I won both fights. I just had a [rubbish] year. It taught me a lot of lessons." He expressed a strong desire to compete for the Lonsdale belt, reminiscing about watching Ricky Hatton win it and how it fuels his ambition. In 2023, Gilley defeated Louis Greene in a memorable match at York Hall, but he has no intention of rematching him. Their initial sportsmanship has soured due to Greene's repeated withdrawals from scheduled fights, which Gilley believes cost him crucial time in his career. "That one gets right under my skin. I wouldn’t give him another camp. So that one is a no go. But anyone else in the world I would fight," he firmly stated. As he prepares to take on Brown, a promising former amateur, Gilley is confident in his toughness and ability. He emphasized the importance of making his career choices pay off, saying, "I’ve still got that passion and that desire. But I’ve got to make this pay off now." Gilley is ready for a hard-fought battle as he seeks to return to form in the ring.
