Rodrigo Martinez Balances Law and Rugby in Quest for Challenge Cup Glory

Rodrigo Martinez, the 27-year-old prop from Dragons, is channeling his legal expertise on the pitch after completing six years of law studies. Recently, he played a crucial role in the Dragons' stunning victory over Stade Francais in the Challenge Cup, securing a quarter-final spot against Zebre on Saturday at 20:00 BST. Martinez, who has made 15 appearances this season, celebrated the birth of his son, Otto, in Argentina last September. Despite missing the early months of his son's life, he has remained focused on rugby and his studies. "I missed his first two months and that was tough but now they are over here," he shared, acknowledging the challenges of parenthood and sleep deprivation. During his time away from family, Martinez dedicated himself to both rugby and academics. "I tried to do at least one hour a day and use my days off; I just built the habit," he explained, reflecting on his journey to becoming a qualified lawyer. Having played in 41 of 62 possible games for the Newport-based region, Martinez has established himself as a vital member of the squad after previous stints with Wasps and London Irish ended abruptly due to financial troubles. "Moving to the Dragons has been good; I love what we are trying to build and develop here," he remarked, highlighting the internal competition with fellow players like Wyn Jones and Rhodri Jones as a driving force for improvement. Martinez emphasizes the importance of the scrum, stating, "For a prop, everything starts at the scrum. It doesn't matter if you carry the ball and make 30 tackles a game if you can't scrum." As the Dragons prepare for their next match in Parma, Martinez aims to replicate the strong performance of their scrum against Stade Francais, keeping his sights firmly on glory in the Challenge Cup.
