RFU Council Member Faces Seven-Month Ban Over Disparaging Comments About Maggie Alphonsi

A member of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) council, Matt Smith, has received a seven-month ban from Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium following a controversial social media post about Maggie Alphonsi, a celebrated World Cup winner. On the final day of the Six Nations in March, Smith questioned Alphonsi’s expertise in men’s rugby with a Facebook post stating, “Can someone explain to me WTF does Maggie Alphonsi know about men’s rugby.” Alphonsi, who earned 71 England caps and played a pivotal role in the 2014 World Cup victory, has since established a successful broadcasting career with BBC, ITV, and Sky Sports. Smith accepted charges of discriminatory behavior and failing to adhere to the RFU’s media policy. An independent disciplinary panel reviewed his case, resulting in a suspension of his council privileges and access to RFU premises until December 14. Consequently, he will miss England’s three home matches during the Nations Championship in November. Although the RFU lacks the authority to remove council members, further actions may be considered by Warwickshire RFU or other constituents. In an email sent three days post-comment, Smith expressed remorse for his actions, stating, “I wholeheartedly apologise for the Facebook Post... I shouldn't have shared my view online.” He removed the post shortly after realizing his error, attributing it to personal stress and anxiety. On May 21, Smith also reached out to Alphonsi directly to apologize for his remarks, seeking to mend the situation.
