Phil Neville Parts Ways with Portland Timbers After Disappointing Season

Phil Neville is no longer the head coach of the Portland Timbers, as the club announced they had “mutually parted ways” with him. In a statement, Timbers owner Merritt Paulson praised Neville's leadership and positivity, saying, “Phil has outstanding leadership qualities and a boundless sense of positivity even in the face of adversity.” Paulson expressed gratitude for Neville’s dedication to the club and the Portland community. Neville’s tenure concluded following a 3-1 defeat to the San Jose Earthquakes, which left the Timbers sitting at 13th in the MLS Western Conference, far from playoff contention. During his first two seasons, the Timbers had made the playoffs but were eliminated in the opening rounds both times. Reflecting on his departure, Neville acknowledged, “I’d like to thank Merritt Paulson, Ned Grabavoy, and the entire Portland family for their unwavering support... I realize we are in a results business, and the results haven’t been to the expectation of this football club.” He expressed gratitude towards his staff and players, emphasizing the bond they shared. This was Neville's second head coaching role in MLS, having previously managed Inter Miami from 2021 to 2023. He also led the England women's team to the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup.
