Manchester United's Summer Strategy: A Focus on Discipline and Long-term Success

Omar Berrada has vowed that Manchester United will not be held to ransom or distracted by agents in the upcoming summer transfer window. The chief executive emphasized a commitment to following the recruitment model that led to significant improvements last season, where the team rose from 15th in 2025 to 3rd and secured a Champions League spot. United plans to kick off their summer acquisitions with a £35m deal for Atalanta’s Ederson and aims to add at least one more midfielder. Potential candidates include: Aurelien Tchouameni Carlos Baleba Mateus Fernandes Elliot Anderson (also a target for Manchester City) Last year, United invested £200m on three forwards—Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko—all of whom scored double figures in the Premier League. The less expensive goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, proved to be a valuable addition. Berrada reiterated the club's strategic approach, stating, “I think the template of what we did last summer will be replicated.” He highlighted the importance of balancing experience with youth, and players who have proven themselves in the Premier League alongside emerging talents. Despite recent layoffs of around 450 staff due to cost-cutting measures initiated by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Berrada noted that these actions have positioned the club favorably for the future. He mentioned, “We are in a much better place than we were 12 months ago.” With Michael Carrick appointed as head coach for at least the next two years, Berrada expressed confidence in his leadership abilities: “I would describe him as somebody who is very calm but also very driven.” He believes Carrick possesses the necessary attributes to guide the team through the next stages of their journey.
