Doc Rivers Faces Uncertain Future with Bucks Amid Coaching Changes

Doc Rivers was officially inducted into the 2026 Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in a coaching career that has spanned nearly three decades, including a championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008. However, as the Milwaukee Bucks conclude a disappointing season, Rivers' tenure may be in jeopardy. Reports from Marc Stein indicate that there is an expectation of a potential restructuring or parting of ways between Rivers and the Bucks following a challenging 2025-26 campaign. Rivers took over as head coach during the 2023-24 season after the dismissal of Adrian Griffin, who had led the team to a 30-13 record at the time. The Bucks aimed high, seeking a seasoned coach to propel them toward a championship. Despite the expectations, Rivers finished his inaugural season with a 17-19 record. The following year, the Bucks managed 48 wins but suffered a swift exit from the playoffs, falling to the Indiana Pacers in just five games. This season, the Bucks are missing the postseason for the first time since 2016, with Giannis Antetokounmpo's future in question. Despite injuries, including Damian Lillard's torn Achilles and his replacement by Myles Turner, Milwaukee has struggled to maintain a competitive edge, posting a 17-19 record even with Antetokounmpo on the court. The team has faced issues with rebounding and defense, alongside negative margins in turnovers and free throws. Rivers remains under contract through next season, making his potential exit complex. There is speculation he might transition to a front office role rather than face outright dismissal. Looking ahead, former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins has emerged as a frontrunner for Rivers' replacement. Jenkins brings familiarity to the Bucks organization, having spent his assistant coaching career under Mike Budenholzer, although only for one season in Milwaukee. However, competition for Jenkins’ services is expected to be fierce as other teams seek coaching changes.
