Leicester Welcomes Northampton Fans for Groundbreaking 'Away End' Trial

The Prem's trial of 'away ends' in top-flight rugby is set for a significant showcase when a dedicated area at Leicester's Mattioli Woods Welford Road is allocated for Northampton fans during the East Midlands derby on 9 May. This fixture is among the most anticipated in both clubs' calendars, with potential implications for play-off qualification and seeding as Saints currently lead the table, while Leicester sits in third place. Following this match, Leicester's away game against Sale the next weekend will also implement the 'away end' concept, allowing Tigers fans to gather with fellow traveling supporters. The initiative, designed to enhance the atmosphere, was previously trialed last season during matches such as Saracens v Gloucester and Leicester v Harlequins. Notably, it does not follow a full football-style segregation; visiting fans can choose seats in various sections of the ground, including areas with home supporters. Rob Calder, the Prem's chief growth officer, remarked, "Last season's trial gave us valuable insight into how away supporter zones can elevate the matchday experience and improve the on-screen product for broadcast audiences." He emphasized the goal to foster larger atmospheres, intensify rivalries, and provide fans with a more memorable experience at Gallagher Prem matches.
