Kyler Murray Joins Vikings on One-Year Deal After Cardinals Release

The Minnesota Vikings have secured a potential replacement for J.J. McCarthy by signing former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray. The announcement came on Thursday, just a day after the Cardinals released him. Murray has agreed to a one-year, veteran minimum deal, marking a fresh start in the NFC North. Murray’s new salary with the Vikings will be in addition to the $36.8 million still owed to him by the Cardinals. His availability at a low cost was a key factor in his ranking as No. 11 on Pete Prisco's Top 100 free agents, making him the top quarterback on the market. As the 2026 season approaches, Murray embarks on a new chapter after spending the first seven years of his career in Arizona, where he was the No. 1 overall pick in 2019. This clean slate in Minnesota could be advantageous for the former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, especially after he struggled to deliver the success the Cardinals desired. In Minnesota, Murray joins a strong receiving corps featuring Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson. This supporting cast positions him well to make an immediate impact; however, his ability to stay healthy is a major concern. Last season, he missed the final 12 games due to a foot injury and faced significant setbacks in the 2022 and 2023 seasons after a torn ACL. If he can remain on the field, there's optimism that Murray will excel in his new environment. A two-time Pro Bowl talent, he often approaches 4,000 passing yards in a full season and is recognized as one of the most dynamic running quarterbacks. The Vikings had been expected to pursue top quarterbacks in free agency, particularly after McCarthy's inconsistent performance over his first two years. McCarthy, who finished last in the NFL in completion rate at 57.6% last year, will benefit from a competition with Murray. If the Vikings aim to develop McCarthy into a future starter, Murray's presence as a veteran mentor could be a strategic advantage for both players.
