Mourinho Takes Stand: Files Complaint Over Turkish Football Ban with ECHR

Jose Mourinho has officially lodged a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) regarding disciplinary actions taken against him during his time as coach of Fenerbahce. The Strasbourg-based court confirmed on June 1 that it has accepted Mourinho's application and is now awaiting observations from the Turkish government. Mourinho contests a 600,000 Turkish lira (£9,705) fine and a one-match ban from the dressing room and bench area, penalties imposed by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) in November 2024. These sanctions were a result of alleged unsportsmanlike conduct towards rival fans and critical comments about refereeing standards made during a match. In his appeal, the 63-year-old asserts that his right to a fair trial was compromised, claiming that the TFF's disciplinary and arbitration committees are not independent from the federation's president and board. He also argues that he did not receive a reasoned decision, as the federation failed to justify its verdict formally. Additionally, Mourinho believes that the penalties violated his right to free speech, punishing him for voicing his opinions on referees. The ECHR is examining whether the football panels were independent and impartial and if they fairly balanced Mourinho’s right to free speech against the interests of the sports federation. After his departure from Fenerbahce following a Champions League play-off defeat in August, Mourinho joined Benfica, guiding them to an unbeaten season in Portugal's top division, which ultimately placed them third behind Porto and Sporting Lisbon. Rumors suggest he may return to Real Madrid, with Marco Silva anticipated to take over at Benfica after leaving Fulham. Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, securing La Liga and the Copa del Rey. His managerial career also includes stints at Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Roma, where he won the Conference League in 2022.
