Joe Launchbury Announces Retirement: A Rugby Career Filled with Triumphs and Memories

Former England and Harlequins lock Joe Launchbury will retire from rugby at the end of this season. The 35-year-old has made a significant impact on the sport, earning 70 England caps and contributing to the 2016, 2017, and 2020 Six Nations-winning teams, alongside his participation in the 2015 and 2019 World Cups. His last appearance for England occurred during the 2022 Six Nations. While he has not officially retired from international duty, Launchbury expressed that he is "at peace" with his absence from the squad. Joining Harlequins in 2023, he has made 50 appearances but has only played six times this season. Launchbury stated, "It has been coming for a while... but the time feels right to step away from rugby at the end of this season." Reflecting on his career, he noted, "Rugby has given me more than I ever dreamed of... memories that will stay with me forever." A product of Harlequins' academy, he began his career at Wasps, where he made 170 appearances and served as captain for 12 years before the club's closure in 2023. After a stint in Japan with Toyota Verblitz, he returned to the Premiership with Harlequins. Launchbury debuted for England in 2012 and was named England player of the year the following year. He played a pivotal role in the 2019 World Cup final and celebrated a Grand Slam victory in 2016. Currently sidelined with a short-term quad injury, he expressed a desire to remain involved in rugby, stating, "I am looking forward to what comes next, and most of all being present to watch my children grow up." Harlequins head coach Jason Gilmore praised Launchbury, emphasizing his exceptional leadership and professionalism, noting the significant impact he has made in English rugby.
