Harlequins Appoint Jason Gilmore as Permanent Head Coach Amid Coaching Changes

Harlequins have officially appointed Jason Gilmore as their permanent head coach, following his temporary role over the past six months after Danny Wilson departed just before the new season began. Gilmore, who originally joined the club as defence coach in 2024, is set to lead the team in a critical phase as they currently sit second from bottom in the Premiership. In a significant move, Robbie Deans, the former coach of Australia, will join the Harlequins as performance director starting next season. Deans, 66, brings a wealth of experience, having served as a key figure in the All Blacks' coaching staff before becoming the first non-Australian coach of the Wallabies in 2007. Additionally, Rob Hunter, previously the coach of Exeter Chiefs, will take on the role of forwards coach at The Stoop next season. This new coaching trio aims to revitalize the club's performance, especially after suffering their sixth consecutive defeat against fellow strugglers Gloucester. Gilmore expressed optimism about the challenges ahead: "There's a significant amount of work to be done, but that's what makes this such an exciting opportunity." He emphasized the importance of building the right environment and standards to propel the club forward. Gilmore also highlighted the positive impact of Deans' involvement, stating that his guidance will be invaluable. Laurie Dalrymple, the club's chief executive, mentioned plans to recruit an assistant defence coach to alleviate some of Gilmore's current responsibilities, indicating a strategic approach to enhance the team's performance.
