Buccaneers Duped by Fake Emeka Egbuka Account for Nearly a Year

A fake social media account posing as NFL wide receiver Emeka Egbuka has caused a major stir after posting a controversial question about CTE on X, prompting a response from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team clarified that the account, which has been tagged in tweets for almost a year, was not legitimate. On draft day, the Buccaneers selected Egbuka with the 19th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and announced it on Twitter, tagging the account @EgbukaEmeka. Just minutes later, they shared a video of Roger Goodell announcing the pick, once again tagging the same account. This led many fans to believe that the account belonged to Egbuka due to the team's endorsement. Over the course of the year, the Buccaneers tagged @EgbukaEmeka 58 times in various tweets, including a post two days after the draft featuring Egbuka. Surprisingly, even as late as January 3, 2026, the team continued to tag the fake account, indicating a lack of verification on their part. In a twist, the Buccaneers' Communications team had previously tagged the fake profile in a tweet back in June, revealing a significant oversight by the organization. The incident highlights the challenges of verifying identities on social media platforms, especially following the removal of the blue checkmark system that once helped distinguish authentic accounts from impostors. As a result, the Buccaneers mistakenly engaged with a fake account for nearly nine months, demonstrating the potential pitfalls of social media in the modern era.
