Everton Commemorates Hillsborough Victims with New Stadium Tribute

Everton has unveiled a permanent tribute at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster, honoring the 97 football fans who tragically lost their lives in 1989. This disaster occurred during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, marking one of the worst stadium tragedies in history. The memorial features two young mascots holding hands—one in an Everton shirt with the number nine and the other in Liverpool red wearing the number seven. This imagery symbolizes unity beyond the historic rivalry between the clubs. In a heartfelt statement, Everton expressed their respect, stating they welcomed representatives from the Hillsborough families and friends from Liverpool Football Club to pay their respects. They shared on X, “Remembering the 97 on the 37th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. A tragic day for football and our city. Forever in our thoughts.” Liverpool legends Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush laid floral tributes during the unveiling. This Sunday, Everton hosts Liverpool in the Premier League, marking the first Merseyside derby at Hill Dickinson Stadium since the Toffees moved from Goodison Park last year. With ambitions to catch up to their local rivals in the league, Everton sits eighth, only five points behind Liverpool, currently fifth and holding the final Champions League spot. The previous encounter saw Liverpool winning 2-1 at Anfield in September.
