Eve Higgins and Anna McGann: Ireland’s Dynamic Duo in Rugby and TikTok

Best friends Anna McGann and Eve Higgins have emerged as pivotal figures in Ireland's rugby scene, celebrated not only for their on-field prowess but also for their engaging presence on TikTok. The duo boasts a combined following of over 33,000 on the platform, where they share lip-syncs, dances, and behind-the-scenes glimpses into their team dynamics during tournaments. Initially, McGann faced resistance from Higgins when it came to participating in their TikTok videos. "At the start I'd ask Eve and she'd be like 'no' and then I eventually got her - and once I got her she was hooked," McGann shared during an interview on the Ireland Rugby Social podcast. The camaraderie flourished during their time at the World Cup, leading to countless moments of laughter and creativity. Higgins, who first met McGann at a sevens camp in Dublin at age 16, noted the significant transformation in McGann's confidence. "I was so shy... it didn't happen until I was 21-22," McGann reflected, acknowledging how Higgins and their teammates helped her become more self-assured. The friendship has remained strong through numerous challenges, including sharing a room during intense training camps. "Eve and I roomed together for five weeks at the World Cup and somehow we're not sick of each other," McGann stated, highlighting their mutual understanding and respect for personal space. Both players transitioned from sevens to 15s rugby, a path shaped by the limited opportunities available for women at the time. Higgins emphasized the importance of the sevens format as a vital pathway for players of her generation, noting that, "Thankfully now there's a women's programme, so there's 15s and sevens... but at the time only seven players were contracted to train week in week out." As they continue to thrive on the pitch and online, McGann and Higgins exemplify the power of friendship and resilience in the world of women's rugby.
