Tommy Freeman Opens Up About Post-Lions Tour Struggles and Recovery Journey

England centre Tommy Freeman has candidly shared his experiences following the British and Irish Lions tour, revealing a significant mental struggle that was not immediately apparent to him. After participating in all three Tests during the 2-1 series victory over Australia that wrapped up on August 2, the impact of the tour lingered into the new season. While the mandatory five-week rest period physically rejuvenated him, it was Northampton director of rugby Phil Dowson and head coach Sam Vesty who recognized Freeman’s mental state needed attention. They intervened by reducing his training load and match participation, which allowed him to navigate the early part of the 2025-26 season more effectively. He later joined England’s autumn campaign, although a hamstring issue affected his performance. Freeman reflected, "I struggled without realising it. My body felt good, but my mental state wasn’t in the best spot." He explained that the transition back from an intense tour often leads to stress and illness due to the sudden relief from pressure. His post-tour holiday, which included trips to Universal Studios and Disney World in Florida, also contributed to his fatigue. He admitted, "I could probably have managed my time off better." Looking ahead, Freeman is set to continue his centre partnership with Fraser Dingwall, following their recent outing in a 31-20 defeat by Scotland. As he prepares for the upcoming match against Ireland at Allianz Stadium, he acknowledged that transitioning from wing to centre remains a work in progress, stating, "There’s loads to learn still." His journey illustrates the complexities athletes face beyond physical performance.
