Eddie Jones Urges RFU to Keep Borthwick Ahead of World Cup Challenge

Eddie Jones argues that the Rugby Football Union (RFU) should retain Steve Borthwick as England head coach ahead of the 2023 World Cup in Australia. Following a promising start with 12 consecutive wins, England faced a disappointing Six Nations, suffering four losses, including a historic defeat to Italy, resulting in a fifth-place finish. Jones, who previously led England and was dismissed after a lackluster 2022, emphasized Borthwick's capabilities. Having taken over just nine months before the World Cup, Borthwick managed to secure third place in France. Jones noted, “Steve’s done a good job with England, they’ve just come off a string of 12 wins,” highlighting the coach's potential despite recent setbacks. He acknowledged Borthwick’s need to address the team's underperformance in the tournament, stating, “He knows why he’s had a bad tournament, he knows how he’s going to turn it around and I’m sure he can do that.” Jones, now coaching Japan, stressed the importance of the RFU’s review of the Six Nations being conducted by someone familiar with Borthwick's work, as he reflected on his own experiences with previous reviews. In light of England's thrilling 48-46 defeat to France, the eventual champions, Jones reiterated, “I think [Borthwick is] the right man to coach England and they should support him through this.” He cautioned against making hasty changes, labeling it “foolhardy.” Overall, Jones remains confident in Borthwick’s ability to lead England into the World Cup, urging the RFU to provide the necessary support.
