Eddie Hearn Urges Oleksandr Usyk to Chase Rematch with Rico Verhoeven Before Retirement

Eddie Hearn has recommended that Oleksandr Usyk should seek a rematch with Rico Verhoeven, emphasizing that the Ukrainian should aim to retire on a high note following that fight. In their previous encounter on May 23, Usyk retained the WBC heavyweight title by defeating Verhoeven at the pyramids of Giza. However, the fight's narrative is contentious, as Verhoeven, a kickboxing legend in only his second boxing match, seemed to be leading until a controversial stoppage in the 11th round. The referee halted the bout after Usyk landed a series of punches while Verhoeven was on the ropes, despite the bell ringing. Key points from Hearn's analysis include: Usyk was reportedly behind on two scorecards after 10 rounds, with only one in his favor. Hearn noted that while Usyk is a legacy-driven fighter, the bout with Verhoeven was more financially motivated. He commended Verhoeven's unorthodox style, which posed challenges for Usyk. Hearn believes the stoppage was premature, suggesting Verhoeven deserved a chance to finish the fight. Looking ahead, Usyk's next steps could involve either a rematch with Verhoeven or a mandatory defense against Agit Kabayel. Hearn stated: "If I was Usyk, I’d be rematching Rico Verhoeven straight away in Holland, and I would probably end my career there with a win." Despite the potential risks, Hearn feels the outcome of the first fight offers Usyk a valid reason to pursue a second bout. Usyk, who also holds the WBA and IBF heavyweight titles, aspires to become a three-time undisputed heavyweight champion. However, the possibility of losing his WBC title looms if he opts for a rematch instead of facing Kabayel.
