Determined Southend Skipper Gus Scott-Morriss Rides Another Team's Bus to Victory

Gus Scott-Morriss, the determined skipper of Southend United, showcased remarkable resilience by hitching a ride on Bedford Town's bus to reach their crucial match against Halifax Town. After his car broke down on Friday, Scott-Morriss faced a race against time to make it to the game. Arranging transport with Bedford Town, who were heading north for their own clash at South Shields, he managed to arrive just after dinner on Friday. Kevin Maher, Southend's boss, praised Scott-Morriss's commitment, especially considering he had been dealing with a sore hip earlier in the week. Maher noted, "I considered resting him... he had planes, trains, and automobiles to get here." Despite the travel challenges, Scott-Morriss not only played but also scored, marking his 17th goal of the season, which equaled his tally from the previous year. Southend's impressive performance led to a 6-2 victory over Halifax Town, solidifying their place in the play-offs and climbing to sixth in the National League standings. The team is now unbeaten in eight matches, showcasing their strong form. On a positive note for Bedford Town, they managed a 1-1 draw in their match, which bolstered their chances of avoiding relegation from National League North. They currently sit three points clear of the bottom four, aided by a significantly better goal difference as they approach the final game of the season.
