Colin Kaepernick Reflects on a Decade of Activism in Upcoming Memoir

A decade after his impactful protest, Colin Kaepernick prepares to release his memoir titled “The Perilous Fight” on 15 September. This date marks nearly ten years since he famously knelt during a preseason game, a poignant demonstration against police violence and racial inequality. Published by Legacy Lit, an imprint of Hachette Book Group, Kaepernick's memoir aims to provide insight into the motivations behind his protest. He expressed that while many witnessed the moment, few understood the years leading up to it: His struggles with identity The injustices that he could no longer overlook The influence of those who fought for equality before him Kaepernick stated, "That journey, from a Black kid navigating an identity the world didn’t always make space for, to an athlete who realized the game was bigger than football, shaped everything. When I took a knee, it wasn’t a sudden act." Legacy Lit describes the memoir as "equal parts memoir and manifesto,” detailing how Kaepernick's single act of protest evolved into a movement that transformed American sports and culture. Having played six seasons for the San Francisco 49ers, Kaepernick notably led the team to the Super Bowl in 2013, which they lost 34-31 to Baltimore. Beyond football, he has been a strong advocate for social issues, established his own publishing imprint, and co-authored several works, including the picture story “We Are Free, You & Me” and the graphic novel “Change the Game.”
