Chelsea's Iconic Goalscorer Bobby Tambling Passes Away at 84
Bobby Tambling, the legendary forward and Chelsea's former all-time leading goalscorer, has sadly passed away at the age of 84, as announced by his former club Crosshaven. Tambling, who netted an impressive 202 goals in 370 appearances for the Blues, held his record for 47 years until it was surpassed by Frank Lampard in 2013. Making his debut at just 17 in 1959, Tambling was instrumental in Chelsea's 1965 League Cup victory, scoring in the final against Leicester. He also set the unbroken club record of five goals in a single match against Aston Villa in 1966. His international career featured three caps for England, followed by a stint at Crystal Palace, and he later managed several teams in the Republic of Ireland, including Cork City and Cork Celtic. In recent years, he battled dementia. A statement from Crosshaven expressed deep sorrow, calling him a "true Chelsea legend" and praising his infectious passion for football. They noted that he leaves behind a significant legacy, stating, "We are all better, kinder, and richer for having known him." Despite his remarkable goal tally, Tambling's career coincided with frustrations, such as missing the 1966 World Cup and suffering defeat in the 1967 FA Cup final to Tottenham. He continued to be a beloved figure at Stamford Bridge long after retiring in 1970. His humility and warmth made him a cherished member of the Chelsea family, and he will be remembered fondly by fans and teammates alike.
