Catalonia Embraces Sitting Volleyball as a New Inclusive Sport Initiative

Sitting volleyball aims to carve out its niche within Catalan sports as the Federació Catalana de Voleibol (FCVb) revitalizes this adapted version of volleyball. The initiative targets both individuals with and without disabilities, focusing on establishing continuity, visibility, and a stable base of players in Catalonia. The FCVb has historical ties to sitting volleyball, dating back to the 1992 Paralympic Games in Barcelona. Recently, in 2023, the federation has taken pioneering steps to promote and raise awareness of this sport during the Catalan Sports Week. This initial effort has successfully introduced a well-established international paralympic discipline into the Catalan volleyball ecosystem, paving the way for further development. In pursuit of this goal, the FCVb has engaged with key stakeholders in the sitting volleyball community—both nationally and internationally. Notable among these is Sitting Volley Sevilla, recognized as a leader in developing seated volleyball in Spain and serving as a model for other regions looking to expand this sport. The FCVb's new project aims to build on previous efforts and progressively implement sitting volleyball across Catalonia. In the initial phase, the focus will be on: Raising awareness of the sport Attracting new players Providing opportunities for interested individuals to try the sport in a safe and adapted environment To achieve these goals, the federation plans to collaborate with organizations related to adapted sports and physical disabilities, as well as local clubs that can help establish future practice hubs. This collaborative approach is essential for reaching the target community, identifying real needs, and creating a sustainable growth model beyond one-off promotional activities. The strategy includes promotional actions, discovery sessions, open training camps, and activities aimed at enhancing visibility for sitting volleyball. The long-term vision is to gradually implement the project, ultimately leading to a competitive structure that ensures the sport’s ongoing development. Through this initiative, the Federació Catalana de Voleibol reaffirms its commitment to a more inclusive and accessible volleyball experience for all, continuing its pioneering role in promoting sitting volleyball in Catalonia.
