Broadcasters Address Johann van Graan's TMO Criticism in Champions Cup Semifinal

France's television broadcaster of the Champions Cup has responded to Bath head coach Johann van Graan's criticism regarding the television match official (TMO). Van Graan expressed concerns that key foul play incidents were overlooked during his team's semi-final loss to Bordeaux-Begles, specifically highlighting missed instances of head contact involving Alfie Barbeary. In his remarks, Van Graan called for greater consistency in the replays presented to officials, stating that three crucial incidents were not addressed. In contrast, Cedric Beaudou, rugby editor for France Televisions, emphasized that the TMO has full access to all camera angles and footage. He stated, "The video referee is the master of what he wants to see. It's impossible to hide footage." Despite acknowledging that his team was outplayed in the 38-26 defeat, Van Graan noted, "Certain things are not picked up when you play away from home in France." European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) also defended the TMO, clarifying the management of video footage during matches. They explained that the TMO utilizes two screens: one live and another with a five-second delay, ensuring that every incident can undergo formal review. Looking ahead, the Champions Cup final is set for 23 May, where Bordeaux will defend their title against Leinster.
