Brian McDermott Set to Lead England Rugby League into World Cup Challenge

The Rugby Football League (RFL) is poised to announce Brian McDermott as the new head coach of the England men’s national rugby league team later this week, succeeding Shaun Wane. McDermott, renowned for his record as the most successful coach in Super League history, previously led the Leeds Rhinos to eight major titles. Currently serving as an assistant coach for the Newcastle Knights in the NRL, McDermott emerged as the top choice for the national team after a rigorous selection process. He outshone notable candidates, including Sam Burgess, Brad Arthur, Paul Rowley, and former England coach Steve McNamara. Key points regarding McDermott's appointment include: McDermott was on a five-man shortlist interviewed by the RFL last week. The RFL initially targeted Willie Peters of Hull KR, but his appointment with the Papua New Guinea Chiefs shifted the focus. Arthur was considered a strong contender but uncertainties regarding his future with Leeds complicated matters. With the announcement set for Thursday, McDermott prepares to lead England into the Rugby League World Cup in Australia this autumn, aiming to secure the nation’s first World Cup win in over 50 years. McDermott’s coaching journey began with the London Broncos, followed by an illustrious tenure with Leeds, where he achieved an unprecedented treble in 2015. His previous experience includes a successful season with the Toronto Wolfpack in 2019 and a brief period with Featherstone Rovers. Now, he looks to bring his expertise to the international stage.
