Brian McDermott Aims for Change to Challenge Australia’s Rugby League Supremacy

New England head coach Brian McDermott is determined to shift the paradigm as he seeks to end Australia’s long-standing dominance in the Rugby League World Cup. Unveiled as Shaun Wane’s successor, McDermott emphasized the need for a tailored approach that reflects the strengths of British-based players, rather than mimicking the strategies of the Kangaroos. Historically, England has struggled against Australia, having not secured a World Cup victory since its inception, with Australia claiming nine of the last ten titles since 1972. As Australia co-hosts the 2026 tournament alongside New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, McDermott's task is daunting. In his own words, McDermott stated, "You have to have a plan that’s specific and not just a general plan," pointing out that previous strategies have often fallen short by trying to replicate Australia’s game style. He referenced Tyson Fury’s unique strategy against Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 as a metaphor for the approach England must adopt. Despite England's recent struggles, including a 3-0 defeat in the Ashes last autumn, McDermott remains optimistic. "It is bridgeable and the competition is winnable," he affirmed, stressing the need for a distinctive game plan. McDermott, who edged out competition from notable candidates like Brad Arthur and Sam Burgess for the England role, is currently the assistant coach for Gold Coast Titans in the NRL. He acknowledged the challenges of a part-time role but remains confident in his ability to scout players and strategize effectively. Additionally, he confirmed that Jake Connor, previously omitted from the Ashes squad, will be considered for the World Cup, calling him a "tremendous player" and a potential game-changer.
