Brandon Aiyuk's 49ers Future Uncertain Amid Fractured Relationships

Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk remains on the San Francisco 49ers roster despite speculation of an inevitable breakup. General manager John Lynch indicated in January that Aiyuk has "played his last snap with the 49ers," especially after the team voided nearly $27 million in guarantees for his 2026 salary. However, as the new league year begins, no further actions—either a release or a trade—have occurred. George Kittle, tight end for the 49ers, shed light on the deteriorating relationship that unfolded by the end of last season. Aiyuk did not play a single snap in 2025 due to a season-ending knee injury sustained the previous year. Kittle noted that Aiyuk was often absent from the team facility during training camp and the early weeks of the last season, echoing the feelings of isolation he experienced during his 2024 holdout. Kittle shared: "He was kind of at training camp, kind of not." Aiyuk's absence from meetings and locker room interactions further strained communication. Despite expectations that Aiyuk would be a key contributor upon recovering from ACL, MCL, and meniscus tears, he appeared detached during what was meant to be a comeback season. The situation worsened after the report about the voided contract surfaced, leading to a breakdown in communication. Kittle made efforts to reach out to Aiyuk, expressing support during a difficult time. However, following the contract news, Aiyuk's presence dwindled further, as Kittle remarked, "I didn't see him again." The 49ers have been anticipated to trade Aiyuk since last season's turmoil. The potential return for the 28-year-old is now less than it could have been prior to his injury. The Washington Commanders are considered a likely destination, especially given Aiyuk's previous connections with quarterback Jayden Daniels from their time at Arizona State. Kittle emphasized his role as a supportive teammate, stating, "I just try to be there for the players if there's something going on. I don't know what's going on with Brandon."
