Bill Foley's Multimillion Takeover of Exeter Chiefs Set to Transform Club Rugby

Bill Foley, owner of AFC Bournemouth, is on the verge of acquiring Exeter Chiefs in a multimillion-pound deal that promises to infuse Premier League and Hollywood charm into English club rugby. According to The Guardian, Exeter’s chair, Tony Rowe, has agreed to sell the club to Foley’s multisport investment company, Black Knight Sports and Entertainment. This company includes Hollywood actor Michael B Jordan as a minority shareholder, adding a touch of star power to the venture. The investment is primarily funded by Cannae Holdings, Foley’s financial vehicle. Ryan Caswell, Cannae’s chief executive, was seen alongside Rowe during Exeter's recent 35-28 defeat to Northampton. After months of negotiations, Exeter has finally found a buyer among over 80 interested parties. Rowe, who has dedicated over 30 years to the club, expressed the need for a change, stating, "I’ve put in an extraordinary amount of money to keep the club alive but it’s not fair on my family." Rowe emphasized the importance for English clubs to adapt financially, especially with plans for a franchise league anticipated in 2029-30. The sale, involving a 155-year-old members’ club, awaits approval at an extraordinary general meeting on May 7, requiring a 75% vote from approximately 700 members. Foley, who has amassed over $2bn in the insurance industry, has made significant strides in sports since founding Black Knight. His ventures include the successful Vegas Golden Knights, who clinched the Stanley Cup in 2023. Under Foley’s ownership, Bournemouth has thrived, achieving a club-record ninth place finish in the Premier League last season and currently aiming for European competition. Black Knight's strategic approach to data and transfers is set to be replicated at Exeter, promising an exciting new era for the Chiefs.
